I saw that, but have been able to install Notes without an ID and without connecting to a server. That is why I raise this point because there is no authentication required.
Here is how I did so:
-Install the Basic Client.
-Start the Basic Client (to start configuration).
-Click Next on the Welcome screen.
-On the User Information screen, type in "Demo User" in the "Your name" field, put nothing in the "Domino Server", and un-check the "I want to connect to a Domino server".
-On the Instant Messaging Setup, uncheck the "Setup instant messaging".
-Un-check any/all Additional Services.
-Notes setup is complete.
Now, when you start the client, it does not ask for a password, and the client opens. This is almost synonomous to being in "Island" mode, but there is no ID, no connection to any server, and no authentication required.
I've discovered, as long as you have a non-encrypted Database, and have set the security such that Anonymous & Default is at least Reader access, the client can open the database after starting the client by clicking on File->Application->Open, and locating the database.
